Thunder Bay Community Economic Development Commission (CEDC) Unveils New Study on Mass Timber Integration in Mining Infrastructure
Tuesday, September 12 — In response to the imminent surge in mineral exploration and processing, the Thunder Bay Community Economic Development Commission (CEDC) is pleased to announce the release of a comprehensive study exploring the advantages of integrating Mass Timber, with a focus on Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT), in the mining sector’s infrastructure. The study was made possible by the support of the Centre for Research and Innovation in Bio-economy (CRIBE)
Earlier this year, the CEDC released their 2023-2025 Strategic Action, titled “Shaping a Sustainable Future.” This forward-thinking plan, falling under the Natural Resources Development Pillar, is dedicated to positioning Thunder Bay as a world leader in the mining and forest products services, supply, and manufacturing sectors. Additionally, the CEDC aims to foster a safe, welcoming community that offers its residents comprehensive healthcare, education and abundant employment opportunities while maintaining an affordable, high- quality lifestyle.
“As we work to advance the goals of our strategic plan, the CEDC is committed to supporting the mining and forestry industries as well as attracting, integrating, and retaining a highly skilled workforce,” says Jamie Taylor, CEO Thunder Bay CEDC. “This study brings forestry and mining together and illustrates the multifaceted benefits of employing Mass Timber in the construction of workforce communities and mining camps with a focus on the environmental, health and economic impacts. Presenting a compelling case for Mass Timber as a cornerstone of sustainable development in the region.”
Objective of the Study
The primary objective of this study is to assess the advantages of employing Mass Timber, particularly Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT), as a solution for the infrastructure challenges faced by communities engaged in the mining sector.
Critical factors underpinning this study include:
- Long-Term Durability
- Health and Well-Being of community members
- Workforce Stability
- Reducing Carbon Emissions
- Bolstering Canada’s Bioeconomy
The Thunder Bay CEDC is proud to spearhead this study, collaborating with experts, industry stakeholders, and community members to ensure the holistic assessment of Mass Timber’s potential in the mining sector.
“Mass Timber construction presents a tremendous opportunity for the mining and resource development sectors to reduce their carbon footprint and project timelines,” say Chris Walton, Chief Executive Officer, Centre for Research and Innovation in the Bio-Economy (CRIBE). “Working with CEDC on the project has brought us one step further in supporting Ontario’s Forest and advanced manufacturing sectors, creating and keeping value in the North”
The CEDC invites the media, stakeholders, and the public to join us for a presentation of the study at the Cen Can Expo Conference at the Elks Lodge on September 14, 2023 at 1:20 pm where experts will provide insights into the study’s findings and its implications for the future of mining infrastructure in Thunder Bay and beyond.
