Tuesday, September 12 — In response to the imminent surge in mineral exploration and processing, the Thunder Bay Community Economic Development Commission (CEDC) is pleased to announce the release of a comprehensive study exploring the advantages of integrating Mass Timber, with a focus on Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT), in the mining sector’s infrastructure. The study was made possible by the support of the Centre for Research and Innovation in Bio-economy (CRIBE)

Earlier this year, the CEDC released their 2023-2025 Strategic Action, titled “Shaping a Sustainable Future.” This forward-thinking plan, falling under the Natural Resources Development Pillar, is dedicated to positioning Thunder Bay as a world leader in the mining and forest products services, supply, and manufacturing sectors. Additionally, the CEDC aims to foster a safe, welcoming community that offers its residents comprehensive healthcare, education and abundant employment opportunities while maintaining an affordable, high- quality lifestyle.

Objective of the Study

The primary objective of this study is to assess the advantages of employing Mass Timber, particularly Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT), as a solution for the infrastructure challenges faced by communities engaged in the mining sector.

The Thunder Bay CEDC is proud to spearhead this study, collaborating with experts, industry stakeholders, and community members to ensure the holistic assessment of Mass Timber’s potential in the mining sector.
