September 4, 2024 – The Thunder Bay Community Economic Development Commission (CEDC) is pleased to announce a new stream of funding through the CEDC Tourism Development Fund aimed at developing street-art tourism while adding vibrancy, civic pride, and beautification to neighbourhoods.

“Visitors travelling through the city are looking to explore accessible art and local galleries. They are often looking for new and exciting art installations to experience.” states Jamie Taylor, CEO, Thunder Bay CEDC. “The Tourism Muralscape Initiative aims to enhance outdoor art and culture experiences further expanding on Thunder Bay’s year-round tourist experiences.”

The Tourism Muralscape Initiative is a pilot program, providing up to $5,000 in funding for businesses or organizations that have an interest in installing outdoor murals within the City of Thunder Bay limits. Applications for the funding stream are set to open on September 3^rd, 2024. “Many visitors seek out murals and other public art installations that become shared widely on social media, generating greater positive destination awareness. Murals tell our stories, build our pride of place and contribute to a more beautiful and welcoming community.” according to Tourism Thunder Bay Manager Paul Pepe. 

Eligible applicants will be provided the opportunity to work with Art and Culture Consultant, Lora Northway, a longstanding advocate in the art and culture landscape of Thunder Bay.

Murals funded through the CEDC Tourism Development Fund will be added to the Tourism Tour App, with two tours promoting murals on both the north and southsides of the city.
